The Statistics on Family Violence

  • 51% of women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.
  • 360,000 children are exposed to domestic violence each year.
  • One to two women are murdered by a current or former partner each week in Canada.
  • In the time it takes to brew a cup of tea, 3 women will be assaulted by an intimate partner.
  • Physical and sexual abuse costs Canadians over $4 billion each year, taking into account social services, criminal justice, lost wages and productivity, and heathcare.

The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is Canada's largest public foundation that focuses specifically on preventing violence against women and funding women's shelters throughout the country.

Since 1998, the Shelter Foundation has raised over $18 million in the support of 200+ women’s shelters and national partner organizations.

Our Funding Sources

From coast to coast, Royal LePage staff, brokers, agents and community connections gather to organize and run activities and fundraising events for the foundation. Royal LePage agents donate a portion of commissions from sales and Royal LePage offices hold fundraising events across the country. Many of our network donate additional materials, goods and clothing to help the families in these shelters.

Direct Support for Families

These funds go directly to support the local shelters and programs that help to reduce and eliminate violence against women. Every single dollar raised gets to the over 30,000 women and children per year who have taken such courageous steps.

And these people are more than just numbers. Individually, each of them is someone’s mother, daughter, friend, neighbour or colleague. They all have important stories and as a society, we have a duty to help every one of them and let them know they are not alone.

These families deserve our help, and their bravery continues to inspire us to push harder to end family violence forever. Although the statistics may seem daunting, we have been making a difference, and we will continue to fight and fundraise for families who are touched by violence.
